I’m writing a blog during a very bewildering time in American history. George Floyd, a black man, was killed at the hands of the police over a twenty-dollar infraction. I did not say a white officer killed George Floyd. The Minneapolis police department killed George Floyd over a twenty dollar infraction. The people whose duty is to serve and protect are killing its citizens. To be more clear, the police are killing black people in America! Who could have ever imagined this would still be happening in the year 2020?
I am of a child of the sixties born with a loving heart, faithful spirit, and a cautious mind. We were always taught to love our fellow man and to reach our highest level of existence but never totally let our guards down. The possibility of threat was still there no matter who we became or what we achieved.Often, we forget that being successful, having celebrity status, and being financially secure does not protect us.
It may seem as though I am directing this post to a black audience, but I’m not. It is meant for an American audience no matter what color or ethnicity you are. We are all guilty of pre-judging our fellow Americans, and it may never stop, but we need to work at slowing it down. It has taken decades to get us to this better but ugly place in American history. Good and evil, right and wrong, are not laws. They are mindsets!
In God We Trust
To dismantle injustice and inequality, we must believe our freedom is an action, not this lofty principle. We do not cry freedom and shazam all of our problems will go away. The way to change the country is to change the hearts and minds of its citizens. We need to get to know one another as people and share stories of hopes, hurts, and successes. We must get out of our comfort zones even if it hurts to walk in your fellow American’s shoes.
Laws and legislation has only slowed down the effects of injustice but can never destroy it. True justice flows from the heart; it has passion and feelings that only happen when we get to know and respect one another. You will be amazed that despite all of our differences, we are very much the same. I encourage you to talk to someone who does not look like you!
