Fruits and vegetables have many healing properties. I spend a lot of time researching and discussing their benefits. I also spend a lot of time trying to share those benefits with others. We all say we understand there is an enormous upside to eating more plant-based food but are drowning in old habits. The consumption of refined sugar, starches, and high-fat food has plagued society.  I find common knowledge is not always common practice. Adding fruits and vegetables daily can bring about rewarding results.  Conscious and planned food selections develop healthy and fulfilling lifestyle habits. Here are five benefits of fruits and vegetables.

Eat green to get lean!

One of my simple weight loss methods or getting lean tricks is upping my fruit and vegetable intake. I eat more generous portions of fruits and vegetables during the day. Vegetables are such as broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, and lettuce are very filling and loaded with water. Fruit is low calories and sweet enough to fight sugar cravings. There has been lousy press on fruits for years. Fruit sugar is processed differently from table sugar and corn syrup by the body. Unless you are trying to get your body fat into single digits or plan to enter a bodybuilding show, fruits are perfect for any menu.

Digestion is the foundation of good health.

The old cliche’ you are what you eat is not entirely accurate. In truth, a more precise statement is you are what you digest. Eating specifically chewing is the first and least complicated phase of digestion. Once food enters the mouth, quality and quantity play a considerable role in what happens next.  Consuming sugar and starches feed the bad intestinal flora, which creates poor gut health. While consuming four to six pieces of fruit or vegetables, feed good intestinal flora, add water, and fiber to the digestive system.

Colors protect against disease.

Cruciferous vegetables, broccoli, collards, and cabbage have been associated with the reduction of cancer.  While many fruits are high in phytochemicals produced by plants to protect them from fungi and viruses. Adding fruits and vegetables daily can help lower high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and protect against stroke. These diseases are more prevalent in the African American community.

Plants are mineral-rich and loaded with vitamins involved in every bodily function, from muscle contractions, sleep, energy production, and bone strength. Most of these functions go unnoticed in our everyday lives but need vitamins and minerals for nourishment.  Color’s green, yellow, red, and purple all share different contributions to the health spectrum.

Fruit and vegetables are brain-friendly.

Fruits and vegetables are fantastic brain food. Blueberries, beets, pomegranates, and walnuts are among the many fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants, carotenoids, and vitamin K. They protect the brain from stress, aging, and memory loss. Think variety, no think is not a play on words. An assortment of fruits and vegetables is how you are the mind, and they should be fed.
